Acoustic Decking FAQ’s

If I install my acoustic decking in accordance with Part E of the Building Regulations, are there any other regulations I need to consider?

Part E of the Building Regulations refers to the resistance to the passage of sound. You may also need to consider a number of other factors such as Part A – The Structure Performance A and Part B – Fire Safety.

Different types of acoustic decking?

There are many different types of acoustic decking, each product is designed for a particular application. Some products will perform adequately when used on a concrete floor but may not be suitable for use on a timber floor.

How difficult is it to install acoustic decking?

Acoustic decking could be installed by a competent carpenter, however, there are a number of common causes of failure that need to be considered. JCW Acoustic Flooring supply and install acoustic flooring nationwide, please get in touch if you require a quotation.

Can acoustic decks be used under finished flooring types?

Yes!

As well as providing good impact sound improvement, once fitted and allowed to cure, the acoustic deck can be covered by a range of final floor finishes.

These can include, but are not limited to:

  • Laminates
  • Carpet
  • Carpet tiles
  • Real wood flooring
  • Ceramic tiles
  • Vinyl*

*If choosing Vinyl flooring, you may need to complete additional floor preparation steps.

Each type of acoustic decking available from JCW Acoustic Flooring is slightly different, meaning that before laying finished floor types, it is best to check manufacturers’ technical information to double-check suitability.

Do acoustic deck boards interlock?

All varieties of acoustic decks from JCW Acoustic Flooring feature interlocking boards.

Also referred to as tongue and groove, this fitting type comes with many benefits including:

  • Noise and sound transfer are reduced by the interlocking structure
  • Stops shrinking and warping
  • Reduction in boards working loose during use
  • Simplified installation that reduces effort and stress for installation teams
  • Long-lasting stability
  • Stops weakness at joins
  • Fits together in different orientations
  • May not need adhesives and extra fittings as the panels fit together with each other

As such, it is easy to see why interlocking acoustic deck boards are the most popular option for reducing sound transmission.
